To opt for a humanist wedding ceremony is to choose an
entirely secular, non-religious one – that is, one without
hymns, prayers or other religious content. Thereafter,
the key word remains choice.
You can choose to be as traditional or modern, as elaborate or
simple, as you wish.
Scotland is one of the few countries in the world where humanist marriage ceremonies are legally conducted. They are of course recognised as legal in all countries in the world in the same way as other weddings are.
Today I marry my friend,
The one I have laughed and cried with,
The one I have learned from and shared with,
The one I have chosen to support and encourage,
And give myself to, through all the days
Given us to share.
Today I marry the one I Iove. – Bertrand Russell
Humanist weddings have the same legal status as civil and religious weddings as long as they are conducted by a celebrant, who has been authorised by the Registrar General of Scotland.
Each humanist wedding ceremony is unique and deeply personal. A humanist ceremony is a time when you can declare all that you feel for each other in a way that feels right for you.
Same sex couples often choose to celebrate their commitment by having a humanist partnership ceremony, though these are not yet legally recognised, they can be combined with a civil partnership.
The only proviso for having a humanist marriage is that each couple takes out membership of the Humanist Society of Scotland.
The humanist celebrant's role is to suggest, advise and coordinate.
Celebrants work closely with you to compose and
conduct a ceremony tailored to your unique personal
preferences. In particular, they will encourage and help
you to compose your own vows of commitment, so
that what you say is uniquely meaningful to you.
First of all you would contact our local humanist celebrant to register (which at just £30 per couple is pretty good value.) then discuss dates and the type of ceremony that you would like, as well as the wording.
Then when you have chosen the date you will need to fill in the marriage notice form below;
